Bees May Help Find Serial Killers - [ 12:29 p.m. PST, 30 July 2008 ]
A team of scientists believe that bees may hold the key to hunting down serial killers.

Scientists from the University of London say that bees forage for food some distance away from their hives to create a buffer zone around their hive to reduce the risk of predators and parasites locating the nest.

Scientist Nigel Raine says murderers also avoid stalking their victims or killing near their homes.

"Most murders happen close to the killer's home, but not in the area directly surrounding a criminal's house, where crimes are less likely to be committed because of the fear of getting caught by someone they know," Dr Raine says.

He says "geographic profiling" works so well in bees, that it is hoped future experiments on the animals could now be fed back to improve crime-solving.

Instead of using information about the distribution of flowers visited by bees, criminologists' models will use details about crime scenes, robbery locations, abandoned cars, even dead bodies, to hone the search for a suspect.
